Narayana Aditi with Swasthya Sathi in Kolkata: Why You May Need Both

Do you need Narayana Aditi if you already have Swasthya Sathi?

If your family faces a major surgery, probably yes. Swasthya Sathi is a solid base, but it is one ₹5 lakh limit shared by the whole family, at hospitals on the state's list. Narayana Aditi is a separate policy that gives you a much higher surgical limit at Narayana Health hospitals. The two do different jobs, so they work best together.

What Swasthya Sathi gives you

The West Bengal government launched Swasthya Sathi on 30 December 2016. It offers cashless cover of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary hospital care, with no premium to pay. Cover is provided through empanelled hospitals across the state.

The important detail is that ₹5 lakh is per family, per year. If a parent has a cardiac procedure in March and a child is admitted in October, both claims come out of the same pool.

What is changing in 2026

West Bengal signed an MoU with the National Health Authority on 8 June 2026 to bring in Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY, the Centre's health scheme. Swasthya Sathi continues during the transition, and existing beneficiaries are being moved across. PM-JAY offers up to ₹5 lakh per family per year and can be used at empanelled hospitals in other states.

A few points matter for families in Kolkata:

A Swasthya Sathi card does not automatically confirm PM-JAY eligibility, because PM-JAY works from the SECC 2011 database.

Hospital empanelment is still being sorted out. Ask your hospital which scheme it accepts before you get admitted.

The state has announced the Mukhyamantri Swasthya Bima Yojana for residents who fall outside PM-JAY. Check the official portals for the current rules.

None of this changes the main point. Whichever government scheme applies to you, the cover is ₹5 lakh per family, and a private policy fills the gap above it.

What Narayana Aditi adds

Narayana Aditi is sold by Narayana Health Insurance Ltd. It was launched in July 2024 as the company's first product, and came to West Bengal in 2025. It offers:

Up to ₹1 crore for surgeries and ₹5 lakh for medical management (non-surgical treatment)

Cashless treatment at Narayana Health network hospitals

Pre- and post-hospitalization expenses, ambulance services and a range of modern and alternative treatments

Reduced waiting periods if you complete a health check-up and meet the insurer's conditions

In Kolkata and nearby districts there is also Aditi+, which offers top-up options and private room eligibility. Aditi is sold in Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, Nadia, North and South 24 Parganas, East and West Medinipur, and East and West Bardhaman.

Narayana Health runs hospitals in the area, including the Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences in Mukundapur, a superspeciality hospital in Howrah and a multispeciality hospital in Barasat.

How the two work together

Imagine a family of four in Kolkata that holds a Swasthya Sathi card. One parent is advised to have heart surgery. The state scheme can pay up to ₹5 lakh, but that ₹5 lakh is now committed for the year. If someone else in the family then needs treatment, there may be little left.

With Aditi in place, the surgery can be treated at a Narayana hospital under a policy with a surgical limit of up to ₹1 crore. That leaves the state scheme available for everyone else's needs. This is an illustration, not a promise of any particular claim. What is covered depends on your policy terms.

Where the gaps are

Amount. A shared ₹5 lakh can run short for cardiac, transplant or cancer care. Aditi's surgical limit is much higher.

Hospital choice. Government scheme treatment is only at empanelled hospitals, and that list is in flux right now. With Aditi, you have the option of using Narayana hospitals for eligible treatment, rather than relying only on the hospitals available under the state scheme.

Room type. Government schemes are built around fixed package rates. Aditi+ includes private room eligibility.

What to check before buying Aditi

Aditi is network-focused, so cashless treatment is mostly limited to Narayana hospitals. If you live far from one, or your family doctors are elsewhere, it may not suit you. Before you buy:

Read the Customer Information Sheet and policy wording. Narayana publishes both on its product pages.

Understand the waiting periods. IRDAI caps the waiting period for pre-existing diseases at 36 months. Aditi may shorten waiting periods after a health check-up, but that depends on underwriting.

Ask about the health check-up. Narayana requires a pre-policy medical check-up for all retail health plan applicants aged over 60.

Confirm your district. You need an address in one of the covered districts.

Check the network list for hospitals near you.

Your rights as a policyholder

IRDAI's 2024 rules give you some useful protections. After five years of continuous cover, an insurer cannot reject a claim for non-disclosure of a pre-existing condition, except in cases of proven fraud. There is no maximum entry age for buying health insurance, and IRDAI-approved plans must offer lifetime renewal. IRDAI also expects cashless requests to be approved within one hour and discharge approvals within three hours.

Quick answers

Can I keep Swasthya Sathi and buy Aditi? Yes. Swasthya Sathi is a government scheme, so having it does not stop you from buying a private policy.

Is Aditi a replacement for Swasthya Sathi? No. It has a narrower hospital network and a premium, and the government scheme has neither. Use them together.

Who can buy Aditi? Individuals over 18, with family plans available. Check the current family rules on Narayana's product page, since they may have changed since launch.

Is Narayana Health Insurance regulated? Yes. It is registered with IRDAI, and you can verify this at irdai.gov.in.

Will Swasthya Sathi be discontinued? It was continuing during the 2026 transition when this was written. Check swasthyasathi.gov.in and beneficiary.nha.gov.in for the latest.
